The O'Hare
Ranch south of Johnstown was homesteaded in the 1880's by Kenneth's Grandparents.
Kenneth's Mother Goldie and her husband Ted, ran the ranch in the early
1900's. During the 30's, Grandma Goldie saved the ranch by raising turkeys
and shipping them east. Today, Father and brothers Corby and Doug sell
artificially inseminated replacement heifers, a business that began 10
year ago as a spin off the traditional cow/calf operation. |
| Kenneth
and Ruth have been lifelong residents of the Sandhills. They met while
attending high school in Johnstown and were married after Kenneth got
out of the service. They moved to the family ranch and lived with Kenneth's
parents for a few years. They have 5 children, Corby, Cindy, Doug, Becky
and Tod, 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren who all, at one time
or another, have helped out on the farm and ranch. |
In
1979, both Corby and Doug returned home and joined their father in the
farming/ranching operation. They farmed around 1500 acres of corn and
ran around 600 cows. They also had a small feedlot, where they fed out
their calves. In 1990, they decided to sell all the cows and started the
replacement heifer program. |
| Corby attended
college and graduated with a degree in Pharmaceuticals. He is married
to Jan, who is the music and drama teacher at Ainsworth Public School.
They have 4 children, JD, twins Scott and Pat, and Alyx. |
Doug attended
college and graduated with a Business Ag degree. He taught Ag for 2 years.
He is married to Linda, who was also a teacher and substitute taught.
They have 2 children, Jeremy and Branden. |
While Linda
owns the B&B and "Serves up a big platter of Sandhills hospitality"
and Jan is busy with music and drama, they do not get heavily involved
in the heifer sales. When buyers call and ask the question "What
can you tell me about the heifers you are selling?" Jan humorously
answers "They're black and they're pregnant."
